Before She was Found and The Overnight Guest

I found Heather Gudenkauf a few years ago through my library newsletter or new book releases and have been following her and reading her previous books ever since. I have never read a book that she has written that I didn't like.

Three pre-teen girls in a small Iowa town are researching a local urban legend when a tragedy happens and the 3 girls and their families are thrust into a police investigation. And it takes a lot of investigating to unravel what has happened.

In a slow build up of various points of view, we learn of school bullying, dark web messaging, and the angst of trying to fit in. Several red herrings throughout will leave you guessing until the end what happened to bring the girls and their families to the tragic night.

Five stars and a great listen on the audio version!

Gudenkauf's most recent release starts off 20 years prior with a family massacre and missing teenagers. In the current time frame, a writer has rented the abandoned farmhouse where the tragedy occurred while she finishes her true crime novel on the murders. When a winter storm rolls through and cuts her off from the town and all neighbors, she finds a boy half frozen in the yard.

So many things are happening in this book and it is hard to see how they will all fit together, but then they do and it blows your mind! Gudenkauf is a master story teller and this book is just the latest proof of that!

Five stars for me and another fantastic listen on the audio version!
