Absolutely devastated

I got some really crummy news at work yesterday. My totally awesome boss and her husband who is a director in a neighboring area are moving to Buffalo, NY and my boss will be gone by the end of the year and most likely by the end of September.

A little back ground on my work history. When I was in college, I participated in the co-op program and worked for a couple of local companies full-time while I was in school. I would work a quarter and attend school the next quarter. The first job that I had as a co-op, I was a glorified secretary. I didn't learn anything related to accounting. I had to spend my lunch hours covering the phones and I made copies and filed. Super fun!

My second co-op job was with an insurance company. I learned a lot and got hired on full time while I was still in school and I took night classes to finish my education. I wasn't thrilled with the bosses that I had, but I enjoyed the work and the people that I worked with for the most part. Well, I at the end of my stint at this company, I did not like my boss at all. He was basically a tyrant. After a merger different company acquired the company that I worked for, I was a casualty and had to find somewhere else to work.

My next job was something that I took because I was out of work. Most of the people that I worked with were cool, but the boss was a push over. I never had enough work and spent a lot of time online. There were a lot of empty promises made and I got fed up with the crap after a little over 2 years and I called a head hunter.

The time line for getting the job that I have now is pretty short. I called the head hunter on a Friday night on my way home from work. I got my resume together over the weekend and met with the guy the next Tuesday. I had an interview the following Monday morning with my boss and met with the controller that Wednesday and had the job offer Thursday afternoon. It all happened within 2 weeks!

After being there for almost 2 years, the only bad thing about this job is the drive, but I have adjusted. I am really concerned about where the job will be heading and who they will bring in. I just can't have another bad boss. I can't handle it. Right now, everyone else is optimistic. Well, everyone except for me and Kelly who has been with my boss a while longer than me. It seems that we are the only ones who know how bad this could get.

Well, I am going to have to try and deal with it and take in as much information as I can for now. Wish me luck!

I am going to have to start thinking about making them a going away quilt. They are going to need something warm in Buffalo!

Jill,
Hang in there. I have been with my current employer for 22 years and in the same department in I/T since day one. I have had at least 7 different managers in that time. Some were excellent managers, some were great mentors and some sent me into extreme anxiety attacks. Everyone asked me why I didn't apply for a job in a different department in the same company. My response was always that if God wanted me somewhere else He would tell me. My last two managers have been fantastic, but I know that could change at a moments notice. I know that when the time comes you will make the right decision. Karen from Quilted Chaos.

Sorry to hear about the upcoming big change! It's hard because your work life is such a big percentage of how/where you spend your life--the last thing ya want is stress there. Maybe the replacement will be a good one--don't add to your stress worrying too much 'til there is genuinely something to be concerned about. I sure hope it turns out well. I think your idea for a going away quilt sounds lovely!

God, this does suck. I'm so sorry. I've been there, done that and I've yet to have it come out good. So I'm not going to sugar coat it and say it's only going to get better...I can only help keep you sane!! I think the idea for a quilt is awesome.

It's like a box o' chocolates, you never know what you'll get! Great plan to make them a quilt. Maybe the next one will be wonderful. Maybe it'll be a woman who quilts?!
You never know.....

Hang in there Jill - just take it all one day at a time, but have that resume polished up just in case...

Hey - you could always follow them to Buffalo? Then you'd be closer to me!!!! LOL!!

Hang in there, Jill. Maybe this will create an opportunity to YOU to move up. When I first joined my current company, my boss was a real J-E-R-K. And I knew that coming in, but really needed the job. The company fired him after I'd been there 18 months - good thing 'cause I was just starting to get really fed up and look elsewhere for work, which would have been a real shame since I like the work and the people at my office. Current boss is nice enough, but he has no back bone.

There are amazing bosses out there. Let's hope you get another one. We're all here for you if the going get tough. Work can make such a difference in your personal life too.

I'm sorry you are anxious Jill, but I agree with Connie. No one likes change, but don't stress out about it until you have a reason to. I have worked in the same factory for 29 1/2 years. I have had some good bosses and some snobbo's, and real a$$wipes. For the past 9 years, I have had the most wonderful plant manager, who doesn't make you feel like you are a peon, and he jokes around and teases us, and the plant owner (we used to be part of a corporation, but are privately owned now)is really nice too.

Don't fret, just keep your options open in case you do need to make some changes.

Aw, I'm sorry. I had *one* bad boss, and vowed never to put up with another one. Good ones just make the job a lot easier, so I'm hoping for your sake that the management changes in your future will end up on the positive side.
