April's UFO Challenge

On our Yahoo Group, Cre8tive Quilters, we have a UFO challenge going on. Anyone who wanted to participate filled out a spreadsheet with 9 UFO's that they had to work on this year. We started in March and didn't include a UFO for December. Jen has been picking numbers for us to work on each month. I have only finished my March UFO which was the spools quilt.

For April, the number pulled was for my Fruit Table Runner and Placemats. I took this class last summer from Best Friends and I just never worked on it again after the class was over. The pattern for the table runner is from the Spring 2007 Quilts an More magazine. The shop added the placemats.

This is what I started with on Saturday when I was able to sit and get organized and start to sew.

By the end of Sunday, I had all of the placemats and table runner put together and trimmed down and ready for the binding. These are quilt as you go by just sewing strips to the batting an backing. Very easy! There is a binding strip to go across the top of each one and then a strip of white and binding to go around the outside of each for the rind. The red pieces get green for the rind so that they look like watermelon.

This is the difference in sizes between the table runner and the placemats.

The table runner is all that I have left for hand stitching down the binding that goes across the top. Then, I have to attached the white and outer binding to the orange, lime and both watermelons and then I will need to hand stitch those bindings down for all pieces. But I am very close to being finished!

OMG, those are way fun!!!! Now, go back on those watermelons and there should be a decorative stitch on your machine that looks like a satinstitched oval. It's PERFECT for seeds using black thread!!! =)

Those are great! My Munchkin is learning all about fruit (he tried kiwi last night) and would love those -especially since he also has a thing for place mats.
