Year of the PIGS - 1/26

This is an off week, so there is no question to be answered. I thought that you quilters participating and following along might need a little motivation! I have been working on a UFO and was hoping to have it finished to show a finished UFO, but I am still chugging away at the binding.

I went through my posts from last year and found my first PIG finish from the year. Two sets of placemats and table runners.



I made my first set of this pattern in 2008 and then got the fabric to make these 2 sets in possibly 2009 (I'm not sure of the year, but I am pretty sure that it was in the summer) and the fabric sat for a while. I'm not sure what made me get them out and work on them, but once I got past some binding issues, I was able to get everything done pretty quickly!

So it is possible to finish UFOs and work on PIGS! ;)

Quilt-A-Thon Weekend

I got so much done this weekend! Not only did I back up the laptop, I watched the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics and have caught quite a bit of the action!

I finally finished up the 2 sets of the fruit table runner and place mats. One set is just 1 runner and 1 of each color mat for my grandparents' neighbors and the other is a runner and 7 mats for my parents. Why 7 you ask? Because my dad decided that was how many they needed - 4 for the kitchen table and 3 for the bar. Yes, he is a little odd. :) I machine stitched the bindings on everything and I think that they all turned out pretty good!



And for anyone who might ask, the pattern is from the Spring 2007 issue of Quilts and More magazine.

I finally finished the hand stitching on the RV place mats. You can't tell from this picture (from my camera phone because I can't download pics from my camera on this antiquated PC), but the brown on the mats is a tone on tone of RVs. It is actually very cute fabric! The other square is a pot holder that was made using the same concept as the Criss Cross coasters. I had plans on making two, but this one was a little obnoxious, so the set will only have the one.



And now that all of these little projects are finished, I can work on the secret project!! Do not adjust your screen! This picture is in black and white so that I can show it on my blog. I won't say which pattern I am using, but I will say that the pattern consists of HSTs and 4 patches! I have already started sewing!!



Right now though, I think that I am going to eat dinner and then work on my sock. Last night, while watching the Olympics, I worked on binding and then knitting on the sock. I am about halfway up the foot of the second sock. It's almost finished!!!

Stash Report Week 7, 2010

I can post! In spite of sending my laptop off site, I can use the antiquated tower and surf the net. It worked great with the keyboard last night, but I am having some issues this morning that are leaving me a bit frustrated so I will not be posting much... But at least I can post!

After sending the laptop off yesterday, I was able to cut some fabric and work on the place mats! All I have left to do is the binding which I am doing all by machine, so those will be done today and ready to mail off! I will post one Quilt-A-Thon post once I get things done today. Although, I don't know if the Kodak software will cooperate on the tower so I might have to make it a more manual process with my phone. :(

No purchases this week and no giveaway winnings so I have nothing added! And I cut the fabric for the last set of fruit place mats. Woo!

Sunday sewing

Sunday, I spent part of the afternoon doing laundry and working on my list of stamping items so that I could post it on CraigsList to try and sell it all off. This is #13 on my goals for the year! After a couple of hours and pictures later, I figured I was done with the stamping things, but still had some laundry so I loaded another charity quilt and quilted it.



I forgot to trim the selvages off the Shrek piece so I ran out of backing. No big deal. The quilting is still doing OK. Now, I just have to find some binding for these two and move on to the next two.

After all of this was done, I watched "New in Town" with Harry Connick, Jr and Renee Zellweger and worked on the lime place mats. The movie was very cute! And I was able to finish the 3 lime mats!



Now, I only have the watermelons left and these 2 sets are done! Woo!!

There's some sewing going on!

At some point this week, Max's back was screaming, "STOP!!!" and he needed some TLC to help the muscles relax and give his back a break. This meant some extra cuddling time which in effect meant some more knitting time. I knew that a bit of heat would help along with the drugs, but I could not find a rice bag for the life of me! After all that I had made last year, I must have given my last ones away. :( So I made a couple more for me and the pups.

Last night and so far today, I made the 3 orange place mats for the 2 fruit table sets that I have been working on.



And I have been making very good progress on my second sock, although there are some differences between it and the first sock... :(





It looks like I have really tightened up my stitches due to the first sock being so loose once it was done. I'm going to finish the second sock and see how it fits and if it is better, I plan on re-knitting the first sock.

And finally, all this work has just worn the Hog Dog out! I think she deserves a score of 9.9 for a great use of toys!

Saturday Quilt-a-thon

After the migraine incidents on Friday, I took my time getting going on Saturday. I worked on a few things that were in my little pile of ready to go items.

I trimmed this baby quilt for the Guild that I quilted in December and then added the binding and machine stitched it down. Of course, these two had to test it out as soon as it was laid out on the floor.



I hand stitched the binding on this wall hanging. This is from the blocks made at the Bonnie Hunter classes in August. It just needs a label and I can hang it up in my office at work. It will bring a nice bit of color to the drab walls.



And I added the binding to the RV place mats. I will be able to take these to work to hand stitch the binding during lunches this week.



It was great to get back to the sewing machine!! And I have big plans for today, too. A few more little things to sew and then some HST's to make!

December Accomplishments

Well, after ringing in the New Year last night with the pups, I am ready to get busy on my goals! I pulled some fabric last night and cut out a few things to make some UFOs. After playing with this fabric, I am excited to work on these projects!

I've also decided that I need to have crafty accomplishments instead of just quilty accomplishments since I am knitting and crocheting again. And hopefully will be cross stitching before too much longer!

1. Signed up for a knitted sock class. It starts on Monday and I am very excited!
2. Finished 3 Lemon place mats for 2 different sets of the fruit place mats and table runners.
3. Wrote a knitted baby cap tutorial.
4. Finished a second knitted baby cap.
5. Finished the Storm at Sea binding and label.
6. Made a set of criss cross coasters.
7. Made a Hot Stuff oven mitt.
8. Made a 9 patch block for the River City Guild.
9. Got to the 200 yards used mark for the year!
10. Made 2 Christmas hunks pillowcases.
11. Made a travel case, a take along bag and a thread catcher.
12. Made a Stich'N' Chix bag.
13. Got my quilting machine working and quilted a baby quilt and 4 place mats!
14. Got a quilt from my bestest friend, Regina! It's just gorgeous!! And now a UFO for me. *sigh*
15. Got a very cute sock knitting bag and a Homefront charm pack from Sue!! Love it!
16. Started organizing my stash room and took inventory of my projects.
17. Packaged up the swap box and comfort quilt for Heather. I'm happy that she got the swap by Christmas!
18. Started a blog for a Judy Martin Quilt Support group.
19. Came up with my 2010 crafting goals.
20. I haven't posted pictures, but I also got 4 granny squares completed for the Calypso afghan that I started crocheting in November.
21. Knitted 2 or 3 dishcloths.

Wow! I was busy!! Now, for the books... I finished 8 books in December!!

1. Knit Two by Kate Jacobs - sequel to the Friday Night Knitting Club. I enjoyed this one!
2. A Quilter's Holiday by Jennifer Chiaverini - the latest book in the Elm Creek Quilter's series. These are very easy to read and not worth getting the audio book. I can read them much faster than listening to them. It was enjoyable, if not a little predictable.
3. Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie - cute, light book.
4. The Shop on Blossom Street by Debbie Macomber - about a yarn and knitting shop. I read this one 'manually,' too. It was a good read and I couldn't put it down once I got started. Very easy read! First Macomber book I've read and I am more than halfway through with the second in the series.
5. A Superior Death by Nevada Barr - This is the second or third in the series. I enjoy the books, but not all of them are on audio as unabridged. This was one, but I can't find the next one so it will be a manual read, too. I like all the twists in Barr's books. I enjoy trying to figure out who the killer is.
6. The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult - I enjoyed this book, but it was a little different than the rest of Picoult's books. I kept waiting for the court room scenes and was a little surprised when the book ended a little suddenly.
7. Finger Lickin' Fifteen by Janet Evanovich - a typical Stephanie Plum book! :)
8. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - LOVED IT!!! I finished this book last night just a few minutes after the ball dropped. Several times last year, I got into book discussions with ladies at the quilt shop and a couple of them said that I just HAD to read this book. When they described it to me, I just sort of smiled and nodded with no real interest. But the comments that the ladies made about the book and the excitement that they showed stuck with me. I downloaded the book from Audible.com early in December and started it just before Christmas. I couldn't turn it off!! I have already downloaded the second book in the series, but I think that I am going to listen to something else first. If you like period/historical novels and romances, this book it for you!!

Man, I did a lot this month!! I'm amazed that I got 8 books read with everything else that I got done, too! I totally rock! ;)

The Good, the Bad and the Evil

Friday night, I spent some time bonding with my quilting frame, Lenny, and machine, Squiggy. (Those names still crack me up!!) After working on the comfort quilt and all of the problems that I encountered, I really needed time to just fiddle with the frame and the machine and the thread and everything to find the right combination. I had picked up some top stitch needles on the recommendation of my very good buddy, Michelle. I was trying to stick with the needles that the manual said to use. I mean, why would they tell you to use one specific type of needle if you need to use another one?

The Good - So I had 2 different sizes of needles and a Kid Komfort charity quilt that I loaded onto the frame. I was very aware of how I was loading the fabric and batting since I had some issues with this on the last quilt. Everything went fine and I was ready to start sewing. The new needles work great! I was able to use up some bobbins that were left over from other quilts to free them up for new quilts.

Another good thing was that if I have a good bobbin in the machine, I can use the Connecting Threads thread that I bought without having thread breaks. Woo hoo!! This is very good since I have so much of this thread! I will just have to deal with the excess lint, but I'm OK with that!

The Bad - I started having a couple of spots with skipped stitches on the last thing I quilted. It wasn't too big of a deal and I just went back over the spots again before I removed it from the frame. Also, I still can't use the humongous cones of glow in the dark thread that I won at the quilt retreat in April. I'm think that these might go into the 1,000th post giveaway...

And the Evil - I'm still having bobbin issues. When I bought the machine, it came with like 5 bobbins. Of course, this is just not enough! I have since bought the 'correct' bobbins like 5 different times and only a couple of times have they actually been the right bobbins. Because of this, some of the bobbins have gotten mixed up and I can't tell which bobbin is right just by looking at them. Sometimes I can tell by putting them into the bobbin case, but not always then either. So I keep working on separating the good from the bad.

It will be great knowing that the Connecting Threads Thread will work with a good bobbin. I'm actually very happy about that!

OK, so here is what I did on Friday!

The Kid Komfort quilt



Close up - trust me, these stitches look great in person!



And the place mats. These will be a cinch to bind, now!



As long as I had put off trouble shooting the problems, this was not as much of a chore as I thought it was going to be. I'm so happy that I was able to quilt and move along on these projects! But the machine still needs a cleaning and I will add it to my list of things to do in the New Year!

Little things done

Last week, I made an effort to sew at least an hour each night. Even on the nights when I had a Guild meeting and a holiday office party I still got an hour in.

I finished my Christmas hunks pillowcases.



Using the instructions from the Oven Mitt pattern for the bias tape binding, I figured out a much easier way to bind the fruit place mats that I put together. Here are 2, but I finished the third about a half hour ago. Much easier to machine stitch it all down than to try and hand sew every one of them when I will have 13 total to do.



Friday, I quilted! More on that in a separate post. And Saturday, I worked on a few things. A take along bag, a thread catcher and a travel case. All 3 made with less than 3/4 yards of each fabric!



Then, I made this Stitchin' Chix bag for a holiday party last night. I almost wish that I had brought it back home with me! But I have more cut out! The bag was pretty well received and it would have been better had it not been for Barb and her blasted home made Snuggie! (Holla!!!)




Today, I spent some time holding Max - his back is bothering him today - and burying threads in the comfort quilt, ripping some stitches out and crocheting a little. I have been pretty productive!

The weekend

This weekend was a pretty laid back weekend. Saturday, I spent the morning and part of the afternoon cleaning up my inbox, my sewing area and my bedroom. When we woke up in the morning, apparently I was not moving quickly enough for Max. As soon as I sat up, he moved to prevent me from laying back down! Goof!!



Once I got the cleaning done, I worked on attaching the binding to the comfort quilt and then worked a little more on some placemats. I ran out of bias tape for the binding so I have to pick up some more of that from Joann's. After attaching that to the last 2 and a bit of hand work, these will be done!



I also worked on another baby cap to practice with the double pointed needles. I took pictures along the way and I plan on writing up the tutorial today.



And Sunday, I made another dishcloth to donate to the raffle for the Guild. The new one is the one on the right. And I had a few more things to donate.



The raffle was last night at our monthly Guild meeting. This was the first time that we did this type of event and I think that we did well. We are hoping that we made at least $500! And I think that we will definitely do this all again.

November Accomplishments

November was a fairly productive month! Lots of little things done and several projects were worked on.

1. The dog quilt - I finished assembling the quilt, quilted it and bound it. It was very well received!
2. Quilted the Crumbs quilt
3. Added the borders to the shop quilt. ** This will be the last quilt I do for the shop as I have quit. There was not enough benefits to working there and it was just getting in the way of my free time.
4. Made 10 swap blocks for a swap on the TQI yahoo group. I also swapped all of the blocks out.
5. Finished a patterned dishcloth. Worked on other dish cloths, too.
6. Started an afghan of granny squares.
7. Went shopping at Joann's for Black Friday deals!
8. Assembled and quilted the comfort quilt for Heather's hubby
9. Knitted a baby cap with double pointed needles
10. Cut out 2 different quilts that will be made from the same pattern
11. Cut out 4 RV placemats, 2 pillowcases, and an oven mitt
12. Assembled most of 3 fruit placemats. They just need to be trimmed up and bound.

Books read

1. The Longing by Beverly Lewis - The last in a three part series. Lewis is my favorite author of Amish stories.
2. Tea Time for the Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith - I am not up to date on this series and I can't wait for the next one to come out!
3. Fatally Flaky by Diane Mott Davidson - This was the latest in the Goldy Bear/caterer series set in Denver, CO. I have read all the rest of the books in the series and it had been a while since I read the last book. I forgot how much I adore this series and the characters and the author!
4. Something Wicked by Carolyn G. Hart - I am enjoying this series and this was only the second or third in the series, but not all of them are available in audio form. I had to actually read this one and it took me a while. I have the next book ready to start reading 'manually,' too. I'm hoping that I can get to the audio versions quickly!
5. Murder on a Girl's Night Out by Anne George - I started this book on tape a while ago, but my tape player ate the tape and I wasn't able to finish it. After a bit of searching, I was able to find a Book on CD version and was able to finish this one. I don't like not finishing books so I was happy to be able to hear the end of this one, but I won't be continuing in the series. It was not one of my favorites.

So that is it for November! Now, I have to write up my December goals. I got a lot done from what was on my November list, but there are a few things that will be carried over into December. That's quite all right though - everything will get done in time!

Stash Report Week 48

UGH!!! I just spent about an hour and a half loading and trying to quilt a quilt. First, I had problems trying to load the quilt because the backing fabric was cut pretty crookedly. Once I got all of that finished, I tried to use a spool of YLI thread. I got halfway across the top edge to hold the top and batting in place and the needle broke into a bunch of pieces. I think that I found them all, but I am pretty sure that this threw the timing or something off in the machine because it started skipping stitches. So I gave up on quilting and I will be taking the machine in this week.

This week was pretty productive as far as prepping projects. I have 2 quilts cut out, placemats, pillowcases and an over mitt. Now, I just have to start sewing!

And I only bought a little bit of fabric this week. I am sure at this rate that I can get to 200+ yards used for the year! Woo!

March Accomplishments

My list is a little light on quilty items for the month, but I did go 2 weeks without a sewing machine to piece on. I know that April will be a lot better because of the quilt retreat that starts in 3 weeks. :)

1. Had a session of Ninja Toy ER where I sewed up about 300 (ok, like 10) toys, much to the excitement of the ninjas.
2. Finished loading up the closet with my clothes
3. Cleaned for days and days and days!
4. Hung some hardware and 2 sets of blinds in preparation for my guests this month
5. Prepped 20 kits for the new guild’s friendly block swap
6. Quilted Wagon Wheels and attached the binding. Still waiting to hand sew it down.
7. Had a birthday and got a very cute little cake from KT and Sarah that I didn’t have to share with anyone! Being single ROCKS!!
8. Finished the 4 February teal BOM blocks
9. Finished 4 blocks and assembled a top for a super secret project
10. BOUGHT A NEW MACHINE!!! JJ is a Janome 6600!
11. Made 4 cupcake place mats and a cupcake table runner for the shop.
12. I also finished at least 2 if not 3 books from the iPod. I just can’t remember all of them off the top of my head.
13. Oh, and I received a TON of donations for the quilt retreat!

A couple of finishes

While at work yesterday, I was able to finish the cupcakes! Quite a few of you asked about the pattern. It's Cupcake Party and for 1 cupcake it takes a half yard for the background and a fat quarter for the top or 1 yard of background and still 1 fat quarter for the tops to make 2 identical cupcakes.

And Jennifer came into Cincinnati and brought her mom and her kids into the shop so that she could meet me before retreat! Her kids, Jack and Jenna, were too precious and I kept them occupied while Jennifer and her mom looked around. Heck, even Jan got into it offering them pretzels! Jennifer - it was great to meet you and we'll see you really soon!

I forgot to post pictures of the February BOM blocks that I made last week. I was waiting until I was done with my secret project before pressing them and then I forgot to post a picture. These were made with Bubba.



And finally, Linda and I worked the inventory at the shop today. I suggested that we go to IHOP for breakfast so she picked me up and off we went. She brought me my birthday present - Peeps and a coloring book and breakfast!



Very cool! I haven't broken into the plastic yet, but the night is still young!

January Accomplishments

With the Waun-A-Quilt challenge, I really got a lot done! I have also been doing what I can to fit quilting in at any given time - at work during lunch, in the mornings before getting ready for work and, even when I get home from work around 8 and am very tired, I usually have binding that I can sit and work on. It would have been interesting to see how much time I accumulated this month while quilting.

1. Finished the binding and attached the label to the red and cream log cabin
2. Made a rice bag to help in healing me of my Cold That Would Not Leave.
3. Finished the binding on the green and orange table topper which I still need to ship off
4. Worked a little more on the purple Not Your Grandmother's Log Cabin
5. Began tracking my net fabric used - to date it is 18.02
6. Quilted and bound 3 Kid Komforts quilt for the Guild
7. Took a machine applique class and loved it! Now, I have to finish a sample for the shop...
8. Made 8 pillowcases entirely from stash!
9. Completed the Cafe au Lait in Every Pot quilt which included finishing the top, quilting, binding and adding the label! Have I mentioned how much I love having Lenny and Squiggy, the machine frame and Mega Quilter? giggle
10. Made 24 criss cross coasters
11. Finished three 6.5" blocks and one 12.5" blocks for the Thimbleberries Club
12. Helped Linda quilt a Nickel quilt on Lenny and Squiggy
13. Made a top for a shop sample
14. Worked on the final pieced border for my Milky Way quilt - more than halfway done! woo hoo!
15. Made 4 coffee placemats
16. Quilted and attached the binding on Lover's Lane. I also have the label ready to be hand sewn down, too.
17. Made 4 blocks for the Teal and Brown $2 a block BOM

Wow! That is a lot!

Wait a minute... I feel like I'm missing something here....

Oh, yeah! I beat Jen in the untweaked version of Waun-A-Quilt! Woo hoo!! But we were even in the tweaked version, so I am still calling it a tie! :)

OK, I am off to try and finish my Milky Way top tonight! I don't have too much farther to go!

Answers to some questions

Quite a few of you have asked about the pattern and fabric line for the Lover's Lane quilt. The fabric is Flirtations by Moda and it came out in late 2007 or early 2008. The pattern is Sunny Lanes which is the Pat Speth's first Nickel Quilt book.

Now, some have asked about the placemats that I made. My buddy Jeanette showed me how to do these last year. They are pretty flexible in that you can adjust the sizes of everything. The coffee placemats ended at 13.75" X 19.25". I think that I was trying to get them to end at 14 X 20, but with the way I finished them, it took a little more from the pieces. The two end strips are 3" and the 2 accent strips are 1" finished. The main fabric is 12" X 13.75". I made the top pieces, used leftover batting pieces, and cut the bottom pieces. I layered everything with the right sides of the fabric together, sewed around the outside and turned them right sides out and then quilted them. Or, you can quilt them and then bind them. They are pretty flexible. And easy!

Weekend Update

Well, I guess that making my list kept me on task and I was fairly productive. I didn’t get everything finished, but I got enough done to make me happy.

I already showed the cutting that I finished. Here are the placemats for my aunt who hosted Christmas.



And my Thimbleberries blocks for the BOM. I made one 12.5” and three 6.5”. Check out those points! It certainly pays to take my time.





And presenting a labeled and freshly washed Café au Lait in Every Pot. Ninja approved!



And I loaded Lover’s Lane on the frame and made a couple of passes so far. I decided against doing hearts because I was still not comfortable doing them on a real quilt. And I think that the close loops looks great so far!




I’m using a pink and brown variegated Lava thread by Superior. It is just lovely! And it really pops on the dark brown inner border!

For a final recap, my goals were:

1. 4 Thimbleberries blocks - DONE
2. 4 blocks for Teal BOM - not done
3. Quilt Lover's Lane including label - Well, the label has been made, but it is going to be hand stitched to the quilt. The quilt has been loaded and a couple of passes have been made. I should finish it tonight.
4. Cut pieces for Thangles Milky Way's last border - DONE
5. 4 placemats - DONE
6. Attach binding to umbrella quilt - not done, but the binding is ready
7. Cut pieces and begin assembly on a sample for the shop - Well, the pieces have been cut. And I will start drawing my lines at lunch today for the HST blocks.

I am calling this a successful weekend even though 1 item was not started and 3 items are not completed. I still got a lot done and some things finished that weren't even on the list. And I feel relaxed and refreshed today. Now, let's see if that holds up once I get to work.

Sooo Productive!

Well, I am giving up for the night. I got a lot done today and I have a little bit of time in the morning before going to work to finish up some blocks, but right now, my eyes are starting to burn.

Let's see, I cut fabric for a quilt for the shop and for a final pieced border for another quilt. I finished 4 placemats. I made 2 labels for quilts. I pieced a backing for my Lover's Lane quilt. I cut binding for a Kid Komfort quilt and I started working on finishing all of the Thimbleberries blocks for the BOM.

I think that my labels look good and they just need to be hand stitched to the quilts. And I am happy to have the placemats done and out of the way.

For now, I am off to bed. The ninjas are giving me the eye to let me know they are tired. I guess all the sleeping that they did today while I sewed really wore them out. :)

Retreat - Sunday

Sunday morning, Cathy and I got up and started packing things up from our room. We had to check out by noon, but we could stay and sew until 5. We meet some other ladies for breakfast and then it was back to sewing!

I was able to finish the borders on the star top pretty quickly.



I read through the instructions about the final pieced border and decided that I would look at shop’s sample because the instructions weren’t too clear. I straightened up my area a little and decided to finish up the Independence Day placemats for Judy. I had 4 mats to sew around the edges and then turn right side out and quilt. Around this time, people started packing up and leaving, but I decided that I would say until I got all of the mats finished. I had YLI brand red, white and blue variegated thread that I had also used on the table runner. The batting was left over pieces of Warm and Natural so I knew that I didn’t need a lot of quilting. I decided to just stitch on the white areas so that the thread would show up well and this is what I came up with.



I was able to get all 4 placemats done around 2 and packed up my stuff. The lodge had 2 rolling carts for us to use to take all our stuff to our cars, but when I was ready, both carts were in the other room with supplies and no one was really actively loading or unloading the carts. I ended up carrying all of my stuff upstairs to my car and then helping a couple of other ladies get their stuff up. When I was done helping them, Jeanette and Maureen were all packed up so I carried their stuff out for them, too. By 3:15, I was exhausted, hungry and ready to leave! I picked up the elusive milkshake for myself on the way home and I enjoyed it immensely as I drove on to rescue my ninjas!

Judy's Housewarming

The secret projects that I have been working on were for Judy's Housewarming presents.

Judy had been living with her mom saving money for around 2 years. She decided that, while it was nice living with Moms and saving money, she needed to have her own space and I mean she needed it RIGHT NOW! She closed on her house at the end of August and was able to move in September 13.

Tonight was the night that she offered to make us dinner and we decided that we would gift her with our handiwork. Each of us took a holiday and made her decorations for that holiday. We had been working on our items since mid-August.
