Modern Designs for Classic Quilts Blog Tour

Today is my day for the Modern Designs for Classic Quilts blog tour!

This is my very first blog tour! I'm so excited to be participating! You are probably wondering why I got picked to participate and I am going to share that with you now!

The authors of this wonderful piece of modern quilting with traditional inspiration are Kelly Biscopink and Andie Johnson and I was lucky enough to meet both of these gals at the Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild.

Now here is the very exciting part for me... Back in March 2011, more than a year and a half ago, Andie approached me to see if I would quilt something for her. Of course, I said that I could do that and then she told me that it was a secret and I couldn't show anything on my blog. And then, she had another quilt and Kelly brought me a third quilt. And I couldn't show anything on my blog!

It was agony to keep a secret for that long! But now, I can show my pictures!

The first quilt that I quilted for the book is In the Clouds.

I really love the simplicity of this quilt, but the colors and the pop of the flying geese is fantastic in person!

Here is a closer view of the quilting. It is just straight lines that flow back and forth. It reminds me of clouds.

And I will take a few minutes to say that I was thoroughly impressed with the layout of the book for each quilt.. The book shows the quilt in a staged picture along with the specific details for the quilt. The next couple of pages give the instructions with great diagrams and a detailed shot of the quilting on the quilt. And finally, there is a full page shot of the quilt. Seriously, the photographs in the book are STUNNING!

The next quilt that I did was also for Andie and it was the Meshugana crazy quilt. This quilt used a wide variety of fabrics to make crazy blocks in creams and khakis. (See what I mean about the book pics and the layout?)

Here are a couple of pictures that I took when I was done with the quilting.

This quilt was so luscious that I bet it will be great to snuggle under this winter!

And now for the piece de resistance! Did you happen to see the cover of the book? That gorgeous log cabin? Guess who quilted it!!!

That's right -  ME!!

This one may have been the toughest to do. I basted the quilt on my frame with large stitches and then straight line quilted it on my domestic machine. And then I picked out all the basting because I didn't want to use a water soluble thread because I knew this quilt wasn't going to be washed before going into the book. But it turned out fantastic!

Here are a few shots that show the quilting a little better.

I really think that I need to make one of these quilts for myself! I just love how all the straight line quilting turned out!

F+W Media, the publisher, and Kelly and Andie generously gave me a copy of the book to giveaway. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post and tell me if you are more of a traditional quilter or a modern quilter. No reply commenters must leave their email in the comment to be eligible for the giveaway.

**edited 11/12 - I have had 4 no reply comments in a row. I will be deleting all no reply comments unless your email is included in the body of the comment so that I have a way to get in touch in the event that you win.**

I will draw a name with the Random Number Generator on November 26 so you have plenty of time to enter! Good luck!

Congrats! on having your quilting showcased in the book. I really like the straight line quilting on the log cabin. Looks like some really great quilts. I am more of a traditional quilter even though I like how traditional patterns have been used. thanks for a chance to win the book.

Wow! Amazing quilting Jill. Great job. I am a traditional quilter. I love your straight line quilting on the log cabin. Amazing job.

Marj said...

Congratulations on being part of a beautiful book.
I am mostly a traditional quilter, but plan to make a modern style quilt soon. Just need to buy some Moda solids.

Sarah said...

Congrats! It must be a great feeling to have your quilting show up in a book!

I am mostly a traditional quilter in terms of the block patterns I choose, but in terms of fabric, I'm definitely more modern. I love the look of the traditional quilts with more modern prints and colors. Bold colors for me all the time! :-)

DeborahGun said...

Amazing quilting! I definitely love modern quilts - especially the colours used.

Mara said...

I love the look of the modern quilts but so far have only played at making traditional ones.

PunkiePie (Jen) said...

Congratulations!! What an honor. I have no idea what I am. I'm guessing more traditional quilt blocks but with modern fabrics?? I don't care for the "civil war" or "primitive" fabrics out there but I like the more traditional looking block styles.

Coloradolady said...

I love that quilting on that quilt! Thanks for the chance, I'd love to own that book!!

Ellyn said...

what a beautiful job you did! I like traditional quilting methods used in modern ways so would love this book!

Susan C said...

It must have been hard to keep your part in this secret but WOW, you did an awesome job on the quilting. I am more of a traditional quilter because I especially love scrappy quilts. The more fabrics, the better!

JoyceLM said...

I'm a modern quilter who loves traditional quilts. Thanks for the giveaway.

Melia Mae Quilting said...

Congratulations on quilting a quilt that is in a book. That is definitely my goal someday. I would say that I am more of a modern quilter. Congrats again. You did an excellent job!

Vic H. said...

I'm more of a modern quilter, I think...and I love the 3rd one you quilted! Great work with the straight line quilting. How awesome to have your stuff in a published book!!! Yeah...

Lisa England said...

I think between Modern and Traditional, I am firmly in the middle! I love and use modern fabrics but probably lean more toward traditional patterns. Your quilting is gorgeous and I look forward to this book!

Way to go, Jill!!! :) I'm definitely a modern quilter but I'm an equal opportunity admirer. :)

Regina said...

Modern or traditional? Not quite sure - probably a little of both - depending on my mood or my fabric. Love how the quilting came out on these -congrats to all involved with the book!

Gill said...

Congratulations!!
What fantastic quilts - I love the flying geese one in particular!
I love modern quilting!!

Carla G said...

What beautiful quilts! :)
I am a beginner quilter and am still trying to find my groove. I like some traditinal but also modern - so I guess I'm stuck in the middle. Maybe traditionally modern? Thanks for a chance to win! :)

I have been a traditional quilter for a long time BUT am getting quite interested and a little excited about making some modern quilts. Have been reading blogs and watching and listening to learn what I can about what makes a modern quilt.

Doris said...

I lean Andie's way, a little more traditional modern than improvisational modern. She and I have had that conversation over email before. I'm very excited about this book release, and can't wait to look it over in person!

Frog Quilter said...

Congrats on the book!!! What a thrill.

I am a sort of traditional gone crazy quilter. I design on the go. My quilts are beautiful. Scraps are my joy!!! Just love them!

Brenda said...

I am thinking I am more a 'modern' type quilter.... but still do traditional, but a 'scrappy' traditional because I did not buy large amounts of fabric, yardage I mean, and most of my projects I use what I have.
I think your quilting on these quilts is stunning!!!! WOW!!! Love it!! And look at you keeping secrets!!! ;-) Good for you!!!
Was it hard though??? lol! Beautiful book, beautiful quilts and as always, you do beautiful work!!!! Have a super week and keep smiling!!~!

Beth said...

How exciting to have your quilting pictured on the front of the book. (I don't think I expressed that very well, but you know what I mean.)

I am a more traditional quilter moving into the modern quilting style with a sense of anticipation and adventure.

This book looks just amazing. I LOVE the cover quilt and am so glad I found this blog hop today so I could find your blog and see your pictures. Awesome job on the quilting of that log cabin. It's a gorgeous quilt for sure, as are the others I've seen in the book.

Because I still consider myself a new quilter, I'm more of a traditional quilter, BUT I am seeing myself drawn to more of the modern quilts too and all the gorgeous colors being used in those more too.

Congrats on the accomplishment - the quilting is awesome!

What beautiful quilts and I love the quilting!! I'm a fairly new quilter but love both traditional and modern designs. Thanks for the sweet giveaway!

I would say I'm more of a modern quilter. Though I do like quilts that take traditional designs and simplify them or change things up with modern fabrics. Thanks for the chance.

Jess said...

I've only made three quilts so far, but I'd say more modern. Also, I love that Andie and Kelly snuck some Yiddish with the Meshugana quilt. My grandmother used to always call my dogs meshugana they were being jumping and barking.

What lovely work! I'd say I'm a modern quilter, but I piece and quilt by hand (at this point) and like to play with traditional forms.

What an interesting question. . I think I'm more of a modern quilter but I'm enjoying seeing traditional patterns in bright colors.

Awesome job on the quilting by the way :)

This looks like a super good book. Modern or traditional? I think I'm both!

I have interest in both traditional and modern quilting. I don't think I could stick with just one!

SO exciting. How great to have your quilting featured in a book. I always love the look of modern quilts but never seem able to make one myself.

Carla said...

I'm definitely a modern quilter. Most traditional blocks don't even appeal to me... I hated log cabin blocks until I saw the cover shot of this book. THAT's the way a log cabin should look. :) Beautiful job quilting it!

I'm a newbie, but I would guess more of a modern quilter (so far)! :)

Congratulations!
I am a traditional quilter who has tip-toed into modern quilting using traditional fabrics/scraps (from my mother's stash).
The quilting is wonderful. You did a fantastic job on your assigned projects. Now, I want to make some of these quilts.

Deb said...

I'm really drawn to the modern quilts - and would love this book! Thanks!

Jan said...

I'm mostly modern, but modern is frequently based on traditional.

Tracy said...

Very inpressive! I just got a longarm and am a bit scared of it yet!
I would say I'm straddling the fence but leaning towards traditional quilting.

Nita said...

I think I'm fairly traditional...in a modernn sort of way. lol! I am saving up to buy a good sewing machine that I can learn to machine quilt on. :)

pbs.seams said...

Definitely a contemporary quilter - I pass up traditional quilts to drool over the modern ones. Would love to win the book!

I'm definitely more of a modern quilting. I'm drawn to simplicity and lots of negative space. Thanks for the giveaway.

Great job with all the quilting. I especially like the clouds of irregular lines.

I am more modern in theory, but I love traditional blocks and vintage quilts. I much prefer "unperfect", make-do quilt styles. I adore the quilt on the cover of the book!

Great book and quilting! I seem to be switching between modern and traditional, but whenever I can scrappy has a huge spot in my sewing as well. Thanks so much!

Lisa said...

Modern quilting is what I like most (using solids) but I am a traditional quilter too, I just like my lines to line up and my points straight. The log cabin is so beautiful! You did an excellant job quilting it and the others. I would love to win this book the designs are beautiful. Thank you.

How fun to have your quilting featured in this wonderful book - the sneak peek is luscious!!! I have been quilting less than 5 years and so far it has mostly been traditional, but as a longarm quilter I have been transitioning towards modern quilts as a way to have fun with the quilting. Thank you for the opportunity to win this great book!

What an amazing book! I'm not a very good quilter, so I tend to stick to traditional or super easy patterns.

Jane S. said...

Well so far I seem to lean towards constructing the traditional, but I dream in modern. What I love most to look at are quilts that use traditional elements and present them in a modern style. Very exciting stuff! :)

Love the quilting and the quilts! sometimes the simple designs are the best. Congratulations on being selected to quilt these lovely examples of modern quilts.
