Scrap Squad Wrap Up

Now that my commitment for the Scrap Squad is over, I thought it would be nice to do a summary post of all of the quilts that I made for the group. This might be a picture heavy post, but I think that it will be worth it to see all of the quilts in one place.

My main goal for each quilt was to piece from my stash. I wasn't always successful with this, but in my attempts I am definitely more aware of what is in my stash and where I have a lot of my stash stashed. For the first couple of quilts, I didn't even remember that I have totes of scraps and unsorted fabric in my closet!

The first quilt was from the March/April 2012 edition of QuiltMaker. The pattern is Chain Reaction designed by Lee Heinrich of Freshly Pieced. I didn't even realize that she was the designer until she posted the pattern for sale on her website a couple of months ago!

Chain

The blog post for my quilt on the magazine's website is here. I used dot fabric that I got in 2011 from the Connecting Threads warehouse sale. I used painter's tape on my cutting mat to mark the placement for my ruler to make each cut.

I finished the binding in Florida and gave the quilt to my grandpa while I was there last February.

100_4555

My favorite thing about this quilt is that I used a chevron print for the binding and cut it on the bias and it gave a very nice design as a result!

100_4557

The next quilt was in the May/June 2012 issue and was Ladder of Success designed by Judy Martin. Here is my blog post on the magazine's blog.

Ladder

I used fabrics from the Connecting Threads trip again, but I had to add a couple of cuts because I didn't grab enough of the fabric from the sale. I called my quilt Down on the Farm because the prints were of farm animals and barns.

101_0280

I gave the quilt to my co-worker and she loved it! I can't decide whether that is my favorite thing about this quilt or that it was a Judy Martin quilt. I do love Judy Martin patterns!

101_0284

The third quilt was from the July/August 2012 issue and was Old Glory designed by Margie Ullery. Our task was to each pick a different theme for our individual quilts and use a different shape in place of the stars. My magazine post is here.

Glory

I decided to use Halloween fabric and worked with the magazine's graphic designer to create a cauldron applique design for the bottom of my quilt. I also used Angelina fibers to make the sparkly bubbles. I really love how the bubbles turned out, but they were sort of a pain to use and very messy.

As a play on words with the pattern name, I named my quilt Old Gory!

101_0531

I quilted this one with big circles and just did a raw edge applique to hold the bubbles on. They ended up puffing out nicely so it was a great effect! I detailed how I created the bubbles and worked with the Angelina in my blog post for the magazine which you can find here.

101_0532

And here is my cauldron design. The applique is available on the magazine's website.

101_0560

The fourth quilt is in the September/October 2012 edition and is called Country Morning. It was also designed by Judy Martin and was originally in an older issue, but it was re-worked for 2012 as a paper pieced design. We were given the option to make a smaller quilt with only 4 blocks and only 2 of the SS members made the quilt in the full pattern size.

Country Morning

We were also told to come up with different techniques or block designs for the blocks. I decided on Stack and Whack and a set of 3 floral fabrics from my stash that I was planning on making a One Block Wonder quilt with.

Here is the link to the blog post on the magazine's web site, but I also did a post with a lot of different pictures on my own blog. A progression of the assembly, if you will. I encourage you to look at this post if you haven't already. I think it is really spectacular to see it come together!

I had Ruthie quilt this quilt for me as I knew that it would need a custom quilting job and I wouldn't be able to handle it on my set up. She did a great job and had it ready for me at the October Shipshewana quilt retreat!

101_0910

101_0905

I think that my favorite things about this quilt are how different the blocks are and that it was my first full size paper pieced project.

The fifth quilt was Bella Amore from the November/December 2012 issue. It was designed by Marianne Elizabeth. Thankfully, we were able to make a twin size quilt instead of the larger queen size that the pattern was written for. I wasn't really crazy about this quilt, but I think it was because of the fabrics in the original quilt and the color placement. It just didn't speak to me.

Bella

I found a 2005 Alexander Henry fabric at Joann's that sang to me and I picked up what I could for the focus fabric for my quilt. I needed to get some matching fabrics and I worked on this quilt at the October Shipshewana quilt retreat. I actually got all of my star blocks and most of the assembly finished by Friday of the retreat weekend. No one was really thrilled with my blocks until I started the assembly, but I was confident of my plan and it all came together!

Here is my post on the magazine's blog.

101_0987

I really like how this quilt turned out! Thanks to my retreat roommate, Laurel, I named the quilt Stars on Fire.

101_0989

I finally used my Bloc Loc ruler on the HSTs for this quilt. It is a fantastic ruler for anyone who loves to make HSTs and pressing their seams to the side. It doesn't work so well when you press the seams open.

The sixth and final quilt is from the January/February 2013 issue and is Caribbean Vacation by Denise Starck.

caribbean

I decided to make a quilt for one of my neighbors and I thought that using red, black and dark and light blue would work well. I re-drew the quilt in EQ and spent a bit of time re-coloring the pattern to come up with something that was appealing to me. My post on the website is here.

And this might be my first pieced backing.

I hope that you enjoyed this trip through the Scrap Squad quilts I made over the last year. This process has really helped me start thinking outside of the box to try and make quilt patterns more my own and to work for my needs.

Final Scrap Squad quilt

This morning on the Quiltmaker's blog, they have revealed my final Scrap Squad quilt. I must say that I am very excited to not have to keep any of my work a secret now! :)

The pattern is called Caribbean Vacation, but I named my quilt Caribbean Nights.

101_1273

Here is part of the backing. I used a Comic book words print from JoAnn's and Batman and Superman prints from my stash.

101_1274

I used a darker blue variegated King Tut thread in the top and a periwinkle Bottom Line in the bobbin. I quilted a stipple design.

101_1275

101_1276

I loved working on this quilt because of all of the small pieces and being able to do a lot of strip piecing. And I really like how it turned out. It is a monster at 88" square!

No Book Review Thursday - 1/24

Another week with very little reading! I am slowly getting into the Fatal Winter by G. M. Malliet and I think that I am almost halfway through The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon. But with no finished books, I can't write a review.

I can show you what has kept me from reading this week.

101_1284

I got a new laptop. Sunday, I was on my old laptop and all was fine and dandy. Monday, the screen wouldn't do anything. I could tell that the laptop was running and it was making all the usual beeps, but the screen stayed dark.

I realized that it was time to put it out of my misery. sigh

So I did a little research, got some input from my computer geek neighbor and Regina's hubby and I picked up a Dell Monday afternoon.

101_1283

I spent most of Monday late afternoon and evening setting things up. I think things are working well so far. I just need to get EQ up and running. :)

Tomorrow night, I need to get a quilt loaded on the frame and get it set up for quilting on Sunday. I also have to prep because I am going to a Sew In on Saturday at Kara's! I still have to cut the greens for the Easy Street mystery and that is what I want to take with me to work on. :)

Since I am giving an update, I will give a little work update. Since just before Christmas, things have taken a complete turn. I am going to start reporting to a new manager on February 11 (I finally have the date to start a countdown!) and I am going to meet with her on Tuesday so that we can get an idea of each other. I have had a discussion with the Director of our department (both old and new bosses' boss) and it has become *almost* a joy to go into work everyday! It is such a relief to think that things are going to change and there is no more waiting for it to happen!

I wrote up the blog post for my 6th and final Scrap Squad today and it should be live on the magazine's blog within the next few days. I'm excited to be able to show off this last quilt!

I also rearranged some things in my studio and I am thinking that the new arrangement is going to be awesome! There is just a teeny bit more room and I think it feels a bit more open. We shall see how it works when I try to cut my fabric tomorrow!

And now, I am off to bed to try and get a few pages read. :)

I'll leave you with this picture of the girls from last night. It is still a little surprising to me when I turn around and see Lula curled up with Max, but she almost never sits this close to Maisy!

Stash Report Week 3, 2013

I think that I am starting 2013 off right! Another week with fabric busted!

This week, I finished making the backing for the last Scrap Squad quilt. I used a bit of fabric to make a pieced backing and it worked out well even though there was a lot of piecing since the quilt top was 88" square.

I got the quilt quilted...

.... the binding attached and I started to hand stitch the binding down last night.

Not too shabby!! This week, I have plans to make 2 pillowcases and cut the greens for the Easy Street mystery.

While I was straightening up yesterday, Lula was very interested the fleece coat that I made several years ago for Maisy. So I put it on her.

Stash Report Week 2, 2013

Last week, I busted fabric for the Easy Street mystery, but that was on Sunday and I haven't done anything more on it since I showed it on Design Wall Monday.

I had a very busy week of meetings and quilting and I didn't get the backing totally finished for the last Scrap Squad, but I made some progress. I am going to get it finished up today and get the quilt loaded on the frame and try to start quilting it.

101_1251

Right now, piecing is calling my name and it is going to be a struggle to get to the basement for some alone time with the frame and quilt. :)

Stash Report Week 52A, 2012 and Week 1, 2013

Last week was a very productive week for my stash busting! Before the new year, I got the binding made and the border cut and attached to the last Scrap Squad quilt. Here is the binding.

101_1224

I also realized that I forgot to count any of the fabric that I had cut for step one of the Easy Street mystery. So that was added in to the 2012 total.

This is where I was when I stopped sewing on New Year's Eve.

For the last few years, I haven't done so well on busting and I am happy to report that this is my first year ending in the black! I resisted all year end clearance sales and didn't add any fabrics in the last few weeks that were not for specific projects! Woo hoo!!

And so far in 2013, I have busted more fabric on Easy Street! I am currently sewing up Step 3.

Friday night, Lula got under foot and I stepped on her paw. After a trip to the vet, we found out it's not broken, but she has been in pain and limping ever since so she has been getting some special treatment. While I was stitching last night, I put her in the chair and rolled her close to my stool and she slept. I think she enjoyed being so close to me while I worked.

Design Wall Monday - 12/31

After my trip north on Saturday for Shirley, the Singer 301 (it's a really great story and I encourage you to click on the link to read about it and see all the pictures!), I really wanted to spend all day yesterday being crafty and creative! I had a bit of cleaning to do, some knitting (the sock and a ruffle scarf), piecing (borders on Scrap Squad #6 and Easy Street Step 1), quilting (one on the frame and load another), and I got the heat resistant material to re-cover my big board. I ended up jumping from project to project a lot!

I did get the big board re-covered. You may remember that shortly after receiving the big board at the 2011 quilt retreat in Shipshewana, someone (ahem, Barb!) cut through the cover. "Accidentally!" I put a patch on it and the patch has been coming off for several weeks so I decided to re-cover the board. I just removed the old cover, left the layer of batting, added another layer of batting and smoothed the heat resistant fabric over it. It didn't take too long at all, but I am afraid that Barb is not allowed near it with a rotary cutter now. :)

101_1219

I did sew quite a bit with Shirley, the 301. I sewed the strip sets for Easy Street Step 1 in about 15 minutes and that was with loading a bobbin. She sure is zippy! And I got the sets pressed and about half cut down into sub units.

101_1223

I made the binding and cut and attached the borders to the 6th Scrap Squad. I can only show the binding. I need to get this quilt loaded and quilted so I can post about it and be done with Scrap Squad... I do still need to make the backing, but there is all day tomorrow for that!

101_1224

After the Scrap Squad work, I went to the basement to do a load of laundry and work on quilting. Wouldn't you know it... After going through part of one bobbin and trying to load up more, I ran out of the bobbin thread. I have another cone on order, but I could have sworn that I had a back up cone of this color. I guess that it just wasn't used as much in April when I went to the IQF show as the other cones that I did get. Or I already went through so much of it that I used the partial and another entire cone. Oh well, the quilting is on hold until I get the new cone because the quilt is so big that I am not removing it and trying to reload it.

And this means that I will have to do nothing but piecing on New Year's Day. I will probably spend most of my time on the Easy Street mystery and piecing on Shirley!

In between cutting the strips down, I threw the Moon Pie blocks on the wall. I should be able to get this assembled this week. I need to throw up the setting triangles and the border needs to be pieced. It is a piano key border and all the parts are already cut out.

101_1220

Max is very excited about all the things that I did get done yesterday! Well, not really. He wanted off the bed. lol

Stash Report Week 52, 2012

I'm still in the black! I'm still in the black! I'm still in the black!!

Last night, after I picked up the new Singer 301 (Shirley, I think!)....

101_1213

.... I stopped at Joann's and got border and backing fabric for the last Scrap Squad quilt.

101_1216

I was hoping to come home and work on the finishing the top and making the backing, but I was too excited about the new machine! I was also straightening up the studio and when I came across the machine oil, I decided to oil Shirley. There are a lot of places to oil!! Do you see all those little arrows?

101_1215

I also picked up some more heat resistant fabric to recover my big board.

101_1217

And I got a couple of skeins of this ruffle yarn so of course I had to try it out. I'm still deciding whether I like it or not.

101_1214

And this past week was Christmas and my wonderful BFF Regina got me a fantastic quilt kit!! Literary Lounger with the Bookish fabric line from Connecting Threads. She splurged for me and now my stash report is taking a hit! lol I love it, Regina!! Not only do I live books, but the colors of this line were made just for me!

Design Wall Monday - 12/24

Well, I almost didn't have anything to post today, but I figured that I needed to get something together. :)

I have been working on the blocks for the 6th and final Scrap Squad. I have the blocks done and laid out on the Design Wall, but I can't show them yet. Here is proof that they are done!

101_1193

I'm really liking how this one is turning out! But I will be happy to be done with it. :)

I also got strips for part 1 of the Bonnie Hunter Easy Street mystery, but I didn't get anything pieced for it yet.

101_1194

I also got a quilt for Ellen loaded on the frame. I will get to quilting on it tomorrow after the family festivities.

Ellen's quilt

And all of this done while combating dogs danced under my sewing chair. It's a good thing they make me laugh!
