Thursday Catch Up

I figured that since I haven't posted in a few days that I should give an update.

As you know, I have been working at my local quilt shop, Best Friends, for a few months now. I generally just work on the weekends and I have been cutting back a little for my sanity. I worked all weekend last weekend and we were so busy - I was exhausted! Monday, I came home from my real job and slept from 7:30 PM until 6 AM.

The shop has also been getting into some shows in the area so we have been kicking things into high gear making up kits and samples and jelly rolls. And everyone has a job. Some make kits. Some cut fat quarters. I am the Jelly Roll Princess. I think that they are going to make up a t-shirt for me. giggle Unfortunately, I have not thought to take any pictures of the rolls that I have made. Tonight, it was 9 batik jelly rolls in a rainbow of colors.

I also have a back pack to finish. Here are some pictures.

Last night, I cut the pieces and started assembling the body of the bag when I broke a needle and my walking foot. Luckily, I can use one of the walking feet that is sold at Joann's. I will have to go to the new one in Mason this weekend to pick one up. And I also have a spare foot so I have been able to continue.

This pattern is one that was written and published by the shop. I have made their purse and the courier bag patterns and they are good patterns, but I always took the class while making the pattern. I hope that I can wrap this one up quickly though and move on to something else. Oh, and it would be nice to turn it in and get paid! :)

Look for my weekend goals tomorrow!

Califon!!! Best Friends has gotten in Mark Lipinski's Califon line. It's gorgeous!!

100_0952

I think that they would be awesome for a Courier bag!

Now what's this.... It's a quilt sample made up from Califon!

100_0953

I turned again to see the wall of bag kits and the store's Brand X patterns....

100_0955

They made up kits with Califon and only have a couple left.

Man, I am really going to have to buy the fabric to make another bag soon!!!

Shopping at my LQS

I didn't realize until I started seeing the March Monthly Accomplishment posts that I barely did any sewing in March. I feel like such a slacker and a bum. Jen told me that I need to play nice with Bubba very soon or he may act up at the Quilt Retreat. This scares me because it is quite possible.

Anyway, after working TOO MUCH this past week on a huge project (until 9 two nights and 7:45 one night and 6-7 hours on Sunday), I decided that it was time to treat myself to a shopping trip! I took some money from my settlement money and headed to Best Friends after work on Thursday. I decided that I would take out a certain amount, but that I didn't want to spend too much over that amount.

I got some ruby slipper fabric to make a pillowcase for Claire. She loves the Wizard of Oz and I thought that this would be great for her.

I also got 3 yards of Flintstone fabric to make myself some pants. I think that this is just adorable!

Flintstone fabric

I this fabric from the Surf and Sand Marcus Brothers collection. I have been eyeing it for a purse for myself for a few months, but I got this to make a purse for Tara, the Tastefully Simple lady. I am pretty sure that she will just love it! The darker brown with the dots is for the trim and the lighter brown is for the lining.

surf and sand purse fabric

I also got a new purse pattern and some fabric to make a donation from myself for the Quilt Retreat. Once I got home though, I thought that this might not be neutral enough and I just love it so I may have to keep it for myself and get other fabric to donate. :) This fabric is a very soft blue background with green and teal accents. I think it's very cool. The striped fabric is for the trim and then cream and green fabric is for the lining.

I also had to pick up the March and April BOM. I haven't finished the February BOM yet. And by haven't finished, I mean that I haven't started. I am now officially 3 months behind!

When Joanne and I were walking out of the office today, we saw this car and thought it was an, umm, interesting color for a car. It's a little toned down in this picture. In real life, it is a bright as Pepto Bismol! Yuck!! We are now infatuated with seeing who drives it!

February Accomplishments

Well, I am not as late getting these done as I was getting January's done. I am quite proud!

  1. Went to an retreat and had to buy a new camera - Ruby
  2. Started receiving donations for the St Jude's Quilt Retreat
  3. Completed the January 2 buck a block BOM through Best Friends
  4. Sewed the binding on and hand stitched it down for the Halloween table runner
  5. Finished the 3 cat placemats that were Christmas presents
  6. Finished Nikki's brown and teal purse that was a Christmas present
  7. Finished the Star and Nine patch top
  8. Learned that I do NOT like mitered borders! Although they can look very stunning!
  9. Dropped a hot iron on the floor at a retreat. I still haven't heard anything, so I am guessing that the center had no issues with my mishap.
  10. Received more donations
  11. Got fabric cut and blocks finished for the first stash pot pie quilt
  12. Made my 200th post and had a small give away. BTW, Dot enjoyed her winnings!
  13. Learned that I am Scarlett O'Hara to Jen's Mammy and that I act 26, when I will be a bit older in less than 3 weeks. :)
  14. Finished my granma's pink and blue purse that was supposed to be a Christmas present
  15. Got another perm and my hair was wild and crazy for an evening!
  16. Worked 2 nights at the St Jude's Radiothon where we raised over $400K!
  17. Finished my mom's purse that was supposed to be a Christmas present. I heard from Mom today and she received the box of presents and loves her purse!
  18. Had fun driving in the snow with the new car and it's manual gears!
  19. Finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I believe this book was 23 discs - this was quite an accomplishment in itself!
  20. Cut fabric for a Guild class that I took on March 1.
  21. I also spent some time in the spare room moving the furniture around so that I can start organizing my stash and kits and UFOs.
  22. And received more donations! We have quite a bit so far!

Well, I think that is it. Hopefully, I will be just as productive in March!

Progress was made today!

I was very productive today at Jeanette's! After we got all set up, I started working on the last purse that should have been ready for Christmas. Here it is!!

It looks great! Now, I will just have to pack up stuff and send it to Florida.

After I got the purse done, I decided to work on the pieced border for the Star and Nine patch since it was only Jeanette and I and no one else was going to be there for another couple of hours. I was able to lay the quilt on the floor and spread out the border pieces to get a good variety on each edge.

Although, the pattern was a little questionable. It read as though each edge would be made of 15 of the pieces and when I got the first 2 edges done and they were short by 2 pieces. This wasn't the first problem with this pattern either - it doesn't give the yardage needed for the borders! How strange is that?

Anyway, here are pictures of the progress on the border so far. I got all of the sides sewn together and I just need to iron one side and then trim all of the sides down to 1/4 inch from the 4 patches. I am going to do that tonight and in the morning so that I can attach the last borders to the quilt and it will be a finished top. Yeah!

I'm getting better

I am totally getting better at these purses! After my migraine went away Sunday afternoon, I put my sewing area back in order and ironed my stash pot pie quilt pieces and then worked on the purse for my granma in Florida. I had finished quilting the pieces on Saturday so I was all ready to start assembly on Sunday.

So, I watched some shows from TiVo and sewed and then took about an hour break to make dinner and eat and then it was back to the machine. I got everything done except making the box bottom which is the last step and while I was trying to do that, I started seeing spots again. I took the dogs out and straightened up and eventually figured that I could see well enough so I put the last 2 stitches in for the bottom. Now, it's done!

This morning, I have woken up with a bad headache. We are supposed to be getting snow overnight tonight - in fact, we have a winter storm advisory. If there wasn't a chance that I would be housebound due to the snow tomorrow (fingers crossed!!), I would still be in bed right now sleeping off this headache.

Keep warm everyone!

Saturday Retreat

After going to bed on Friday at 1:30, I slept very soundly. I woke up at 7:11 Saturday morning and was wide awake so I got up and peed and then went to the gym. I was the only one up from our group, but the place was still bustling! There were probably 10 ladies already sewing. I got to work on the cat placemats. Before I went to bed on Friday, I had stitched around the outside for the seam so that I could turn them right side out and then quilt. I was able to get all of the placemats turned before breakfast. After breakfast, I finished them up pretty quickly.

Speaking of breakfast, we had pancakes, eggs with cheese and sausage links for breakfast. It was yummy! And we didn't have to clean up a thing!

One thing that I noticed when I got up was that there were these Halloween blocks laying out on the floor and they seemed to be abandoned. Mary kept admiring them, too.

After the placemats, I got started on the purse that I took with me. Nikki's purse was the farthest along so I took it with me to at least get the trim put on. Once I started, I just couldn't stop. I would finish one step and realize that I was so much closer to the end than I thought.

With an interruption for a lunch of pulled pork sandwiches, homemade vegetable soup, a bag of chips and orange pie (yummy!)....

.... I got the purse finished shortly after 1:30.

With the purse done, I was free to work on the Star and Nine patch. I wanted to get the pieces for the border done so that I could start laying them out to stitch them together once I got the inner part of the top done. I had to make a bunch of 4 patches...

And then, I had to attach a dark and a light triangle to each 4 patch.

Through all of this, I kept playing with Ruby. I took a ton of pictures and learned a bit about the camera. I have a timer that I can set....

This is what my triangles and 4 patches look like.

Admidst all of this ironing, sewing and picture taking, I was running out of fuel. I decided to lie down for about an hour before dinner. I warmed up my rice bags and climbed into bed. I was out for a good 10 minutes. I got up just in time for dinner which was a baked breaded chicken breast, mashed potatoes, green beans, homemade bread and strawberry jelly and a chocolate/pudding/whipped cream dessert. It was great! Then, it was back to the star and nine patch quilt.

I was getting tired of ironing seams open and I kept scorching my fingertips when I was sewing the blocks into rows and then rows into part of the top. I can't remember exactly what I was doing, but at one point, I was ironing and I turned around to do something and my foot got caught on the cord and then iron went down. I froze. The iron was probably on the mat for 3-5 seconds. We had to tel the weekend co-ordinators and they were going to have to tell the Center people in the morning. I was very nervous!

Something else happened right before I took a nap. Mary and I kept teasing Jane, the owner of the Halloween blocks, about Jane needing to get the blocks done so that someone could take them home. I started talking abandonment and Mary kept saying that she was going to take them and finish the quilt. While I was sleeping, Jane told Mary that she had 10 minutes to sew it together and then it would be Mary's. I guess that Jane just didn't feel like finishing the top. So Mary started working on the blocks. When Mary got those done, Jane said she wasn't done because it needed a border. I looked at Brenda and yelled, "prairie points!" Brenda agreed that this is what Jane should make Mary do. But Jane had a border fabric to use on the border. Mary got to work.

I worked as hard as I could on the star and nine patch quilt, but I ran out of steam around 1:45 so I went to bed.

Quiet Blog and Weekend Update

My parents have been in town since Thursday and I have been running out and spending time with them at my sister's house almost everyday which is why the blog has been quiet.

Saturday morning, I met Judy and Jeanette at IHOP for breakfast before our class at Best Friends. We had a great breakfast! And there was plenty of time for us to chat before we headed to the class. We got to the shop a little early and they had the doors open already so we went in and looked around a little.

The class is part of the Stash Pot Pie series that the shop bought to present to us. I think that it is a couple of years old, but it was new to most or all of us. Jan and Jessica discussed a little about how to organize your stash and using scraps, leaders and enders, andour first two patterns. Oh, yeah - they also discussed prizes! We will get tickets for showing up to each class and a ticket for each yard of fabric that we use in the quilts that we make for the pattern for each month. We got a scrappy quilt for our first month and I think that if we finish the top, we will use 2-3 yards of fabric so that is 3-4 tickets, including the one for showing up, if we make one quilt.

So, at the first class, we all got one ticket for showing up and they drew for a prize which is the book below - Creating Your Perfect Quilting Space. Guess who won? Yup, ME! Jan, the store owner, said that she was going to have me buy her a lottery ticket because I had won the $100 store gift certificate, too.

After class, I ran to the store and got some ingredients and apples to make an Apple Brickle Dip to take to Ethan's birthday party. I made the dip and put it in the fridge to chill and I finished making Ethan's presents - 2 pillowcases and a drawstring bag for his cars. I had already finished a fabric book for him. I finished the sewing and took the dogs out and was packing up to leave. I got to the party and realized that I had bagged up the dip and the apples and left them on the floor by the front door. :( And since I had taken it out of the fridge and it sat out for most of the day, I had to pitch the entire batch of dip! And now, I have 4 huge apples that were supposed to be used for the dip.

Sunday, I got up and sent some emails about the April Quilt Retreat that I am helping plan. Right now, we have 17 registerants and we can have a total of 60. We are just hoping to get up to 30 which would be double what we had last year. I will have to do another post on just the Retreat. I should probably add my mailers for donations to my January To Do list!

After sending emails, I ran to Joann's and Home Depot and then it was to the bedroom to get some sewing done. I have gotten the purse pieces sandwiched and started quilting the pockets and sides for one. Instead of marking every line like I did with the other 2 purses, I used the quilt guide on my machine and it is going a lot faster! Thelines may not be as even as they are when every line is marked, but you can't tell that much. Once I get the quilting done, I think that I am going to put the purses aside and work on the Star and Nine patch blocks that I need to get done. I am going to have a lot of cutting and piecing to do to get the top mostly done before the class on the 25th.

OK, now I have to get to work. Happy Monday!

FIUM and another random thing

Tonight, I finally got off work at a decent hour and was able to come home and work on the FIUM (Finish it Up Month) projects. I got 2 more purses cut out and some flannel washed to make a couple of things for Ethan's birthday this month.

I have to get to bed pretty soon because tomorrow is the horrid IT Council meeting at 7:30 AM. That is going to come way too early for me!

Max is doing a lot better today! He has been prancing around and, this morning, he got himself up onto the back of the couch. He hasn't done that since last Monday when he starting showing some signs of being in pain. I think that he still enjoys being carried up and down the stairs because we have gone downstairs to work on laundry a couple of times and then we came down from the bedroom a couple of times to go outside and he always waits for me to carry him. Tomorrow, I will need to start cutting down on the pills.

Have a great day, everyone!

Back from the Vet and Pictures

I will get to the fun part first. Here are the pictures from the finished purse. I still have a couple of pictures of our sewing fun from this weekend, but in the interest of time, I will just post the pictures of the purse.

The last one is a comparison because I made the smaller size for Granma. I also used much shorter straps on Granma's.

I left work early so that I could get Max to the vet on time. This morning, he was very vocal with his pain again and I just couldn't bear it any longer. We went in and Max was very excited and nervous about being there. We almost immediately saw another dog and he was anxious to meet him, but I didn't let Max go.

The vet came in and gave the same type of physical exam as last time and said that he doesn't seem to be getting any better from the things that I told him I had observed with Max over the last few days. He wanted to get X-rays. I said OK and they took him back. He said that it would be 10-15 minutes until they would be ready. They brought Max back out to me and then Max immediately just wanted to be held. A few minutes later, they came back in and asked for him again to redo one of the X-rays because the picture didn't come out very clearly. Then they brought Max back to me and he was wanting to get up and move around and go and visit with the other animals.

Finally, the doctor came back in with the X-rays and showed me where the problem is. The space between his thoracic vertebrae is thinning and can be troublesome. He said that if he would lose any control over his lower back or legs or anything, that they could do surgery and he would be a great candidate for that. I think that the thinning is between his T10 and T11 and between the T11 and T12. One looks a little worse. The discs don't appear to be touching in either case, but it is probably what is causing the pain. He also said that this is the location of the problems when dogs go paralyzed in their back legs. Great! This is just what I want to hear! NOT!!

So, the vet said that I could continue with the prednisolone twice a day for 2 more days and that I could be giving the muscle relaxer 3 times a day and I have only been giving it twice a day. I came home and gave him another one of those right away. And now, I have to keep him on 'bedrest' for 2-4 weeks. The doctor said that if we can follow all of these rules, then there is a chance that he will heal and be just fine.

Please keep Max in your thoughts for his pain. And that he heals and won't need surgery any time soon!

I am on my way to Quilt Guild. Tonight, I want to show and tell my I Spy and we are also playing Quilt-O! Wish me luck so that I can win at one round and bring home some fat quarters!

I finished a purse!

Yesterday, I met Judy, Jeanette and Maria at Sew-Ezy and we ran around to 3 quilt shops, got lunch and then headed back to Maria's house to sew for the rest of the day. We had a great time! I worked on a couple of different things and then worked on a purse. I got some pictures, but I haven't downloaded them yet.

This morning, I went and saw Spencer wrestle. He did really well and fought hard, but he didn't win. He didn't get pinned down though so that was good.

After that, I went back to Maria's and Jeanette was already there and we sewed for a few more hours. That was when I finished the purse. They were very encouraging for me to get it done!

Now, since I have been home, I really should have been back at it and working on another purse, but I guess I am tuckered out. I am working on laundry and ready for a nap even though it is 7 PM.

And I am now thinking that I need to take Max in for X-rays. He is still in a considerable amount of pain and it doesn't seem to be lessening as the days go by. I would've thought that with the prednisolone and the muscle relaxers that he would be feeling a bit better by now. But he's not. Well, he is able to make it through the night now without a lot of the whimpering and groaning, but he still makes a lot of noise every now and then. And I don't think that he is doing it just to get sympathy from me.

I guess I will be calling the vet tomorrow.

January Finish it Up challenge

Here is my list of things for the January Finish it Up challenge:

  1. 1 more fabric book for Ethan
  2. 2 cat table runners-just need to finish
  3. Blue floral purse-started
  4. Brown floral purse-started
  5. Cat placemats-1 done, 3 to go
  6. Pink and blue Very Badley purse
  7. Yellow Very Badly Purse
  8. Star blocks
  9. Star and Nine patch border pieces
  10. Star and Nine Patch block assembly
  11. Finish organizing stash and spare bedroom

Hopefully, I will be able to make a huge dent in this if I can't get everything done. I hope that I can get everything done!

December Accomplishments

Here is my list of December Accomplishments:

Quilty Things Accomplished:
  1. Finished my 9 patch blocks for my star and nine patch quilt class
  2. Practiced FMQ more on my scrap quilt and quilted a Kid Komfort quilt for our Guild
  3. Finished the Monkey fabric book for Ethan
  4. FMQ a Halloween table runner
  5. Finished coasters and rice heat bags for Christmas presents for co-workers
  6. Completed the first Santa Rag quilt for my Granma's birthday
  7. Bought Fabric for another Santa rag quilt
  8. FMQ the I SPY - this was the biggest thing this month, I think. I also got it bound with the help of Granma.
  9. Finished 1 cat placemat
  10. Started working on 2 Very Badley purses before I realized I had messed them up and quit sewing on Christmas presents for a week!
  11. Began the process of cleaning out the spare bedroom where my fabric stash is kept. This i quilt related because I needed to have a place to put my stash as I bought fabric and I was running out of floor space in the spare bedroom. Now, there is lots of space and lots of containers in which to store projects!
  12. I also started preparing Maddy's 50's Retro Take 5 quilt to sandwich and quilt. I'd like to get that done before Valentine's Day. (no use trying to add it to my January list of must do's!)

Non Quilty Things Accomplished:

  1. Found out that my Grinch Name is Woefulgrump Sourbottom. Everyone should know what their Grinch name is, but the link is disabled! :(
  2. Changed my blog template
  3. Finished Lake in the Clouds by Sara Donati

I think that there might be other things that I have done, but I am drawing a blank right now.

The only other thing that I can think of is that while growing my tiny stash, I won the $100 gift card at my lqs!

Now, I need to make my list of things that I have to do for Jen's January's Finish It Up challenge!

Monday, December 24, 2007

Aww, man!

I was so busy trying to get the purses done for Christmas, I screwed them up! Instead of making a finished seam and then quilting the pockets, I got ahead of myself and quilted everything! Now, I don't have enough fabric to redo the pockets on one purse, but I could have enough for the other one that I was trying to get done for tomorrow. I am now thinking that I should just relax and realize that neither will get done and just wrap up the pieces to be opened on Christmas day. Eh, what are you gonna do? I will just have to go to the quilt shop and buy replacement fabric this week.

Santa pattern

Thanks for all of the compliments on the Santa quilt, ladies! I figured that since a few of you asked about the pattern, I would post a link on the blog.

It is Old Saint Nick! from Saginaw St Quilt Company. They also have wreath wall hanging rag quilts and a Frosty rag quilt. Frosty is very cute, too!

Today, I got fabric cut for 2 purses and part of one purse quilted. I think that the cutting and then quilting is what takes the longest. Hopefully, I will be able to get the rest of the quilting for the one and all of the quilting for the other before it's time to leave tomorrow to go to Granma's. I will have to watch how long I stay there so I can come home and finish getting everything ready for Christmas. I still have to wrap presents.

Saturday, December 8, 2007

Man, oh man!

It was a rough week! I worked late 3 nights. We are having auditors come in on Monday morning and I had to get things in order for them. I was busy all week long! Then, at my quilt class on Tuesday, things didn't work out all of the way with the applique table runner. I need to practice some more on my blanket stitch, but I don't think that I will be making a bunch of them for presents this year. Although I might end up surprising myself! Friday night, I had my second star and nine patch class. We learned how to make the pieces for our pieced border. Out of 4 of us there, only one student had all of her blocks done.

Today, I went shopping with a couple of the ladies from the small group and got some goodies.

This will be for placemats and the easy striped table runner for a friend of the family who lives in Florida near my parents.

I also got this to make Christmas runner.

Placemats and small blanket quilt kits for the nephews.

This will be for another purse - the yellow paisley will be the focus fabric and the brown will be then accent. The checked will go inside the purse.

It got some batting and Maisy sort of adopted it as a new blanket.

Vacation update

It's Monday and my Bubba is still packed up from my class on Friday. :(

Good news - I have started laundry, done my grocery shopping, cleaned up the kitchen, and put all of my purhcases away. I have purchased a bunch of new clothes that will fit now that I have lost the 36 pounds. I am feeling pretty good about the purchases and especially about the sizes of the purchases!
I have also taken pictures of things that I must post. As soon as I am done with this post, I am all set to sew for 5 hours straight! Unless the dogs have to pee. And I need food. But I can sew and eat so that won't be an issue. :)

Here are better pictures of the car:

Here are pictures of the Star and Nine Patch blocks that I have so far and the fabric that I will be using on the remainder of the quilt:

Here are fabrics that I got to make purses for family members for Christmas:

Cincinnati Shop Hop

I lost a week last night. I thought that I had a weekend free before the Shop Hop started and that the following weekend would be when I leave for Myrtle Beach. It turns out that the Shop Hop starts Saturday!! Talk about being unprepared!! I need to get some patterns together (big shirt and Very Badly purse) so I can buy fabric for them in case I find fabric that I just have to have.
And I have to check my pile of fabrics for the I Spy quilt to make sure that I don't need any more. And if I do need more, I need to know what I will need - light or dark fabrics and what size prints. I think that I am OK with the I Spy fabrics, but since I will be going to 11 stores, it would be a great opportunity to get anything else that I might need.
So, next weekend is pretty much all planned out for me. Saturday morning, I am volunteering at Crayons 2 Computers and then Maddy and I are going to run to as many stores as we can. And whatever we don't get done on Saturday, we will finish on Sunday. I am confident that we can get them all done in 2 days. But I am very excited to see all the stores and see what specials they might have. Plus, it will be fun to spend the time with Maddy and wee will probably laugh the entire time!Leave a Comment

Will you see the date this week? ? for you, why are you looking to make more VBS's when you're going to be a skinny mini in no time? You're not going to want to hide that body under a VBS!!

Another WIP finished!

I went to my granma's today to discuss our trip to Myrtle Beach with her and my 2 aunts and cousin. I had to show off my recent projects - the ugly quilt, the big shirt, my Very Badly purse - and they all loved them. I was waiting for a my aunt and granma to give me orders on what colors they wanted for the purse.
While we were talking, I worked on the binding on my table runner that I made at a class in March. I know - that is forever ago, but I just took my binding class to learn how to put it on. I wanted to make sure that I was doing that correctly. I finished the binding and here are pictures of the full view and close up.

Now, onto important matters. We will be leaving for Myrtle Beach on a Saturday morning and stopping in Asheville, SC to see the Biltmore. We will spend the night somewhere close to there. For the week, we will be in Myrtle Beach and will take a day trip or two to Charleston. I need to find quilt shops in Asheville, Myrtle Beach and Charleston. I am very excited to be seeing Charleston again, but am very excited to go to some new quilt shops.
If anyone lives around these areas or knows of shops in those areas, let me know!!

Every time I do I think, "Gee, that is soo pretty." You do really nice work, especially for a beginner. Your table runner is beautiful too. I'd love to have you in any class I teach. Have a great trip. Sounds like y'all will have a lot of fun stuff to do. I would love to see Charleston one day. DH's busy time at work is summer and so with daughter in school it is hard to get away. Be sure to take lots of pictures so I can live vicariously through you. LOL Nikki
